^ Stages and steps of writing process

STAGES

STEPS

I Prewriting

/Writing task/

Defining a purpose you want to realize in writing and an object you are going to write about.

Making a decision about an appropriate speech type or their combination to embody the purpose and the object best.

Defining the peculiar features of the speech type or their combination chosen (text structure, content of the text parts, etc).

Generating ideas to form the text with the help of special techniques, chosen according to the main speech type.

Developing and connecting ideas according to the speech type or their combination chosen.

II Writing

Writing the first draft.

Its development, or writing more drafts, and at last writing the final version.

III Revising

1. Revising the writing purpose and the object.

2. Revising the content, coherence, etc.

3. Proofreading for errors.

(Defining a purpose you want to realize in writing and an object you are going to write about).

I. Read and listen to five text extracts. Each of them belongs to a definite speech type and can be characterized by a special writer’s purpose and an object which is concerned. Pay your attention to such aspects as: what the writer wants to say, what object he is writing about.

1.Star gazing on a winter night is not necessarily a romantic pastime. Even when your boy-friend is the instructor, learning constellations for your astronomy midterm, it is not necessarily a heart-warming experience. All you can think about is your cold feet, your cold hands, your cold nose. All you want to do is to get someplace warm, and to get there as quickly as possible.

(Melinda G. Kramer)

2.»Apple Cake».

The apples are peeled and chopped and mixed with raisins, sultanas, milk, and sugar. Flour and butter (softened) are mixed together in another bowl. The fruit mixture and the egg are admitted to the flour and butter mixture and mixed carefully. The mixture obtained is put into a buttered 20-centimetre square cake tin. A little white sugar is put on the top. The cake is cooked in the oven at 170 C for 1 hour 45 minutes.

(John & Liz Soars)

3.One night during my junior year of high school I put away my homework, turned out the light, and slipped into bed. But I did not go to sleep. I began to think about Anna. The clock ticked. Sleep would not come. Anna. Anna.She simply would not leave my thoughts. Finally I got up of bed, turned on the light, sat down at the desk and wrote her a letter. She never received it. That was the night Anna died.

(Van Varner)

4.^ Mark & Spencer, Britain’s favourite store.

There is no special secret about M&S store. It bases its business on three principles: good value, good quality, and good service. Also, it changes with the times - once it was all jumpers and knickers. Now it’s food, furniture, flowers as well. Top fashion designers advise on styles of clothes.

But perhaps the most important key to its success is its happy, well-trained staff. Conditions of work are excellent. There are company doctors, dentists, hairdressers, and even chiropodists to look after the stuff, and all the stuff can have lunch for under 40p. That is why it became so successful.

(John & Liz Soars)

5.France has a population of 38.8 million. It is usual in Europe because it has more single young men than single young women. It has about 20% unemployment but the tourist industry brings high seasonal employment. The people often borrow to buy houses. Many, however, have second holiday homes. Most people cook with gas, not electricity. They like low alcohol drinks.

(John & Liz Soars)

2.Read the pairs of the writer’s purposes and objects given below. Match them with the text extracts by putting the text extract numbers into the boxes opposite to them.

Writer’s Purpose (P) and Object(O).

a.P.: to describe some peculiar features about life in France. O.: France.

b.P.: to describe the stages of preparing a cake. O.: a process of cooking.

c.P.: to make conclusions about trade at M&S. O.: M&S’s business .

d.P.: to retell about past events. O.: strange events which happened to the author in the past.

e.P.: to prove that sitting in the winter night out-of-doors is not at all romantic. O.: a winter night.

3.Read the speech-type-list given below and try to guess what their difference is. Try to decide to which speech types the text extracts above belong. Explain your choice.

Speech Types.

Subject description (SD).

Process description (PD).

Narration (N).

Reasoning-argumentation (RA).

Reasoning-deduction (RD).

4.Read the items given below. They all disclose the essential difference between the speech types. Look through the text extracts above once more and decide what this difference is.

1. Writer’s purpose:

to describe object(s)

to describe process(es);

to retell about some order of events in the past;

to prove that something is true/ false;

to solve a problem by making conclusions.

2. The object which is concerned:

subject(s);

process(es);

past events;

question(s)/ problem(s).

3. Text peculiarities:

arguments;

order of events;

process stages;

conclusions;

descriptive words.

3.Try to characterize the speech types due to the items above.

(Making a decision about an appropriate speech type or their combination to embody the purpose and the object best).

4.Review the Table 2 which shows the interdependence between the speech type, writer’s purpose and object which is concerned (what purposes and objects are typical for different speech types). Read and listen to two more text extracts and define according to the Table 2 their purposes, objects and speech types.

1.And then I saw it. A dim light. I rushed to it and found myself in front of a small window. I lifted it. Surprisingly it slid up easily, unlike the usual paint-sealed windows of old buildings. I leaned out, gasping, filling my lungs with fresh, cold air.

As my head cleared, I looked down to the street at the end of the alley far below. It was alive with the activity of fire pumpers and the clamor of the crowd.

(Jose M. Sandoval).

2.^ Sister Wendy, TV star!

Sister Wendy Beckett has been a nun for nearly 50 years, but she has a remarkable other life. She writes and presents an arts programme for BBC television called ‘Sister Wendy’s Grand Tour’.

She speaks clearly and plainly, with none of the academic verbosity of art historians. TV viewers love her common-sense wisdom, and are fascinated to watch a kind, elderly, bespectacled, nun who is so obviously delighted by all she sees.

(John & Liz Soars)

5.Imagine yourself a writer or a journalist whose article is demanded by a famous youth magazine. Look through the list of topics given to you to choose one for your article. Decide which of them is the most interesting or promising to you and put a tick into the box.

6.Each of the topics is too broad so you should decide with which purpose and object in your personal opinion your topic goes best. Sometimes there can be more than one purpose (and more than one object). In this case one of them is main and the other is additional. If you choose a combination of purposes (and objects) typical for reasoning forms and other speech types (e.g. RD+N) reasoning is often the main one as it is more expressive and powerful.

For example, topic ‘Marriage’ can include such main purpose: to clear up the question whether creating a family is egually important for men and women and to make conclusions; the object here is the question concerned (RD). As you see, this time the purpose has been formulated not in an abstract way, but with a definite idea. This purpose (main) can be combined, for example, with an additional purpose ‘to retell some events from the past to illustrate the conclusions’, and the object - some events which happened to you or people you know in the past (N). So the speech type combination is RD+N.

7.Write down the topic, and an idea(s) to formulate the purpose(s) and object(s) you have chosen.

topic:

purpose(s):

object(s):

8.Due to the purpose(s) and object(s) defined, decide what speech type (according to the main purpose) you are going to use (see Table 2) and write it above together with your purpose(s) and object(s).

(Possible Variants of Purpose/ Speech Type Combinations),

9.Review the Table 3. There are 20 variants of the speech types combinations which exist and 5 pure speech types. The abbreviations have already been interpreted.

RA+N, for example, means that you intend to prove an idea/ ideas using some elements of narration as examples, arguments, etc. RA, in this case, is the main speech type and N is an additional one.

It is often preferable in creative writing to combine speech types as this way you have greater possibilities to express yourself and to consider your topic in full measure.

The topic you have chosen, can be considered in many different ways, on the basis of different purposes and objects, due to the result you intend to get. Sometimes it is very useful to try different purposes for a topic to realize how to deal with the task best, which speech types to combine.

10.Let’s play with the topics you have chosen. First, reread your ideas for purpose(s) and object(s), think of some information which can go into the text. Now decide how your topic, purpose and object can be formulated if you choose other speech types. For example, going back to the topic ‘Marriage’, which some of you might have chosen, we can take following main purpose/ object pairs and consequently speech types:

^ Topic ‘Marriage’

PD (describing stages of a process).

Purpose: to give some directions to a young couple describing the way the wedding ceremony should be held, as if you are a registry office instructor.

Object: the parts of wedding ceremony.

SD (describing a person, a place, a scene, a landscape, etc.)

Purpose: to describe the appearence of just married couple in front of the registry office.

Object: the scene concerned.

N (narrating about past events which happened in some order).

Purpose: to narrate about some events which happened to your neighbours, friends, relatives before, during or after the wedding ceremony.

Object: the order of the events concerned.

RA (proving/ disproving ideas given as theses).

Purpose: to find arguments and prove that marriage is an important thing/ nonsense.

Object: the problem concerned.

RD (making conclusions on information analysis basis)

Purpose: to analyse facts that you know and to make conclusions if marriage is important.

Object: the guestion concerned.

What is your opinion? Is any of the speech type examples given above enough for writing a good, complete composition on the topic chosen? Why? Think of some examples of purpose - object combinations due to the items given below on the basis of ‘Marriage’.

RA+N

N+SD

RD+RA

11.Think of some speech type combinations to make your future composition more complete.

e.g.: RA+N (to prove that people should/ shouldn’t marry retelling about a case you know as an argument).

Discuss your ideas for future compositions in pairs and say what topic, speech types and purposes are chosen by your collegue.

12.Make up a short paragraph of your own on the basis of your topic, purpose(s) and object(s). On this stage do not think of correcting mistakes or making your text perfect.

13.Give your purpose and object ideas to the following topics and speech types:

Music (N)

Music (RA+N)

Art (RD+N)

Sport activities (PD)

Sport activities (N+SD)

(Defining the peculiar features of the speech type or their combination chosen (text structure, content of the text parts, necessary lexical and grammar components, etc)).

а/ введення об"єкту;

б/ його характеристика;

в/ її узагальнення/ конкретизація;

а/ певний об"єкт знаходиться у певній точці простору та характеризується певними взаємовідношеннями з іншими об'єктами;

д/ даний об"єкт містить ряд специфічних рис, властивостей;

а/ певний процес триває певний проміжок часу, у певній точці простору і складається з певних етапів або дій, які певним чином взаємопов"язані;

а/ фраза-зачин;

б/ фрази, що розвивають послідовність подій;

а/ у певній точці простору, у певний час /як правило, в минулому/, за участю певних суб"єктів розпочинаються певні події;

б/ подається ретроспективний огляд подій у послідовності: результат чи наслідок подій - їх розгортання або навпаки, та здійснюється визначення певних причинно-наслідкових зв"язків, що існують між подіями та їх результатом;

а/ тези;

б/ речення, що доводять тези;

а/ об"єктивно у певних умовах існує певна "проблема", вирішення якої формулюється певним судженням /або рядом суджень/;

б/ існує ряд фактів, аргументів, прикладів, що стверджують правдивість/ хибність даного судження /суджень/;

а/ засновки;

б/ речення, що передають причинно-наслідковий зв"язок;

а/ об"єктивно, у певних умовах існує певна "проблема", яка потребує вирішення;

Аналіз причинно-наслідкових зв'язків, до яких входить існуюча проблема, а також інші явища призводить до її вирішення, сформульованого у вигляді судження;

this process can be divided into some stages each of which has some characteris-tic features

these events started/ finished with a particular event, so there is their order

this judgement should be proved, so there are arguments for and against it

this pro-bleme is connected with other problems, phenomena etc., so their cause-and- effect connection helps to solve it

III.Conclu-sion

Generali-zing/ concretizing the subject characteris-tics

Generali-zing/ concretizing the process characteristics

Concluding the events order

Proving/ disproving the theses

Giving the concluding judgement on the probleme solution

content of conclusion

these features unite this object with a class of alike objects/ make it unique

these stages and their features show that the process is alike/ different from a class of processes

these events resulted in a particular state upon which some conclusions can be made

the arguments analysis shows that the judgement is right or wrong

there is a judgement worked out on the basis of the data analisis which seems true to life

Each of the Schemes is abstract. For example, in the Scheme 1 (SD) there can be much more or less characteristic features of the subject concerned. In the Scheme 2 (PD) the process concerned can include more or, vice versa, less main stages. The same is with the number of events shown in the Scheme 3 (N). The Scheme 4 (RD) is more complicated than the previous ones. In this Scheme some abstract ideas are shown which are connected with the problem directly, and there are some others connected with the primary ideas to make a final conclusion. The number of them depends on your topic and your ability to generate ideas. At last the Scheme 5 (RA) is the most stable according to its components because each reasoning-argumentation consists of such parts as: introducing some theses to a problem solution, finding arguments which prove/ disprove these theses and making a conclusion which should correspond to the theses.

І. /Д/ - визначення місця, часу, умов, суб"єктів подій та зачин сюжетної лінії; ряд подій у ретроспективному викладі, які призводять до певних змін /місця, умов/ у ситуації, що викладається;

3. - "динамічний опис" нових умов та суб"ектів ситуації, їх ознак та взаємозв"язкі /незаштриховані сфери/ події, що відбуваються як наслідок зміни умов та суб"єктів ситуації /заштриховани сфери/ та характеристика цих хронологічно розташованих подій та етапів певного процесу /не заштриховані сфери/; "конфлікт" /К/, який включають події на даному етапі розвитку ситуації та його вирішення /В/;

4. - виділення об'єкту "динамічного опису" з класу подібних явищ за його ознаками, до яких відноситься і "конфлікт" сюжетної лінії;

^ 17.Read and listen to a short text (see: Arakin V.D. p.251). Divide it into introduction, main part and a conclusion if any. Define what speech type

it belongs to (it is not mainly a combination). Decide what logical Scheme this text can be described by.

As it has already been mentioned, it is preferable to combine speech types in creative writing. The main speech type in this combination makes the text basis and the additional only contributes some information. So the additional speech type does not greatly effect the main type logical text scheme. The visual example is given to you as the Scheme 6. The topic here is ’Visiting a Theatre’ (N+SD). The small circles in the Scheme 6 stand for the main events of the narration and the squares - for subject description elements.

18.Give your ideas on the content of this text due to the knowledge you have already got. The model of how to do it is given to you below.

1. Introducing the events: On Sunday my parents and I decided to visit a theatre. My father likes ‘Hamlet’ and the theatre schedule included it. So we decided to watch it and

^ 2. Main Part:

a - went to the theatre. The Opera Theatre is actually a great building with columns and attics. As the weather was hot, we were pleased at the feeling of cool obscurity inside.

b - As we were not pressed for time we had ice-creams in the theatre cafe.

c - We took our seats inside the hall after the bell had rung. ‘Hamlet’ is a serious play, which demands precise vision, deep understanding, which not every actor has. This play demands the efforts of decorators, costumiers and many other people.

d - After the 3rd bell the orchestra started the prelude showing that the perfomance began.

e - The first act was marvellous but the actor who played Hamlet seemed to be loosing his voice. He looked ill.

f - At the end of the scene connected with his and Ofelia’s last conversation the actor started to whisper and finally lost his voice.

g - It happened so suddenly that the actor kept silent for several seconds.

h - But then Hamlet made a sign to somebody behind the curtains

i - and a young girl came up to him and started so speak Hamlet’s words while

her father was walking, gesticulating, and doing everything he had to.

j - We were shocked. All the audience applauded standing to the actors and especially to Hamlet, who appeared so self-confident and contrivant.

3. Conclusion: My parents and I were pleased with this weekend. It is not true that the theatre is unworth attention, because it is hardly possible to get such a pleasure watching TV. However, tastes differ.

(Generating ideas to form the text with the help of special techniques, chosen according to the main speech type).

Okay, here I go, I’m writing, but my mind hasn’t caught up yet. I suppose it will, I can’t imagine how I’m going to keep doing this for time of five minutes. Anyway, rushing across this page is the last thing I need today, because I have been rushing ever since I woke up this morning. The damp radio alarm just played soft music instead of jarring me awake the way it should. I mean, the music was the kind that puts you to sleep, not the kind that wakes you up. Did people ever exist without making music for themselves? What was the first music anyway? Did it come from the animals that make sounds almost like music, like birds? I read somewhere that our sense of rhythm actually comes from our heartbeats. But what about all the other rhythms in life besides our own heartbeats? What about rain hitting leaves, waves on a beach, crickets, frogs, thunder? Now this is getting somewhere. It’s interesting to try to put myself in the place of the original inventor of music. My favourite music, of course, is jazz. Oh, no, wouldn’t you know it. I’ve just gotten rolling and my time’s up. Faster than I thought.

Щ./ / Ellis 1986, І2-
